What do Learning Mentors do?

A Learning Mentor is a member of staff who has been trained to support children in the development of their emotional literacy and their social skills. This support is specific to the individual to enable the child to remove identified barriers to learning. One of the key roles of the school’s Learning Mentors (LM) is to encourage pupils to talk and have their voice heard.

At Julian’s, we have two Learning Mentors, one on each site:

Streatham: Polly Lee-Baker 

West Norwood:   Kerry MacBlain 

Our Learning Mentors use research-based approaches to support pupils' emotional literacy/intelligence and help them self-regulate and resolve conflicts.

These are:

• Zones of Regulation
• Emotion Coaching
• Restorative Approach 

Sessions are always tailored to the individual child’s needs which can include:

• Role play
• Board games
• Time to talk
• Implementing and actioning ECHP targets that are related to social, emotional and well-being development

Some of the areas our Learning Mentors work on with the pupils are:

• Recognising and managing emotions
• Developing self-esteem/confidence building skills 
• Improving and supporting social skills 
• Developing and maintaining friendship skills
• Support with anger management
• Conflict resolution
• General day to day management of their time at school

Who can I speak to if I am concerned and/or need advice?

Referrals are made by the Inclusion Managers, following a discussion with class teachers.
