  • Support for children with English as an Additional Language (EAL)

How do we support children with EAL at Julian’s?

    Admission

We gather information about the child’s background, school, family – this supports our understanding of children’s needs. All families are directed to the Lambeth Welcome Pack which provides information around key services and point of contactin the borough.

    Language Ambassadors

Across both sites, we have designated Language Ambassadors who act as a welcome partner to new children with developing English language skills. These children and staff speak many different languages and will help new families settle into life at Julian's.

    Assessment

We use the Bell Foundation assessment to determine pupils' levels of English and we review the progress of these children in their language acquisition each term to inform the level of support needed.

    Support

To support new learners, we have the following available:

In-class: use of a computer software which uses pictures alongside words for instructions, use of EAL toolkit, scaffolding strategies. Teachers adapt the provision within the classroom so that children can access this (where possible) in their home language.

Racing to English programme: this provides tailored support around everyday vocabulary, both written and verbal.

We also use the Duolingo programme which is delivered to develop early English speakers'.
