This half-term in Year 2, children will be planning their own healthy party. Science, English, D&T and art will all be linked to this theme. In English, children will start the term by reading Sam's Sandwich by David Pelham. They will create their own story based on this book and will invent a disgusting sandwich for a sibling or friend. They will also learn how to write recipes, which will link to their Science topic on Healthy Eating and Exercise. In preparation for their healthy party, Year 2 will also be learning which foods are healthy and why. They will learn about where food comes from with a visit to a farm and will explore why some foods are grown in different countries (which will form our Geography lessons). Each class will also be looking at the utensils needed to prepare their food and why certain items are made from metal, wood or plastic - linking to our second Science topic on Properties of Materials.
In D&T children will be creating their own party hats in preparation for their party, planning their design and learning paper-folding techniques. They will also be creating their own menus. In Art, they will be studying the artist Guiseppe Arcimbolodo (a 15th Century Italian Artist) who used food to represent different facial features. They will then have the chance to create their own faces using real fruit, which they will then draw using pastels.
In Maths children will start the term by learning about place value. Lessons will include counting, representing numbers in different ways (using objects and maths resources), learning about hundreds, tens and ones, comparing and ordering numbers, counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and counting in 3s. Children will then move onto addition and subtraction later in the half-term. Throughout these maths lessons, they will also be encouraged to develop their reasoning and problem skills with some fun maths problems.
Handwriting, Phonics and Guided Reading will continue to be taught every day.
