Welcome back and we hope you had a restful break and are ready for the spring term ahead. This half-term the theme in Year 2 is What is the best way for Mrs Armitage to travel? For their creative unit, Children will be exploring different forms of transport and properties of materials, which will be linked to their English book Mrs Armitage on Wheels. They will look at which materials are suitable to build Mrs Armitage a new vehicle and will then create these in D&T.
In English, children will begin the half-term with the text Mrs Armitage on Wheels by Quentin Blake. Children will start the unit by writing a letter to Mrs Armitage explaining why choosing skates as an alternative mode of transport to a bike isn’t a good idea. They will then retell the story of Mrs Armitage on Wheels in their own words and with their own ending. Towards the end of this half-term, children will research different modes of transport and then write their own information text.
At the start of this half-term, children will be learning about money. They will explore the value of each coin and note, learn how to create different amounts and practise adding money and finding change. Children will then move onto multiplication and division. In this unit they will focus on recognising, making and adding equal groups. They will also learn about the multiplication symbol and make connections between repeated addition and multiplying. Images and arrays will be used to help children solve multiplication word problems. Children will also focus on their two, five and ten times tables. KIRFs will be taught alongside these maths lessons and should be practised at home.
Design and Technology
Linked to their text Mrs Armitage on Wheels, children will be creating a new and improved vehicle for her. They will explore which materials are used to make the different parts of a car and why they are the most suitable. Children will then design their own vehicle and create a chassis, wheels and axle using recyclable materials. These will then be tested on a ramp.
Science this half-term will be closely linked to D&T and English. Children will be investigating different materials and their properties. They will then use this information to decide which materials they will use to create their own model car made from recyclable materials.
Handwriting, Phonics and Guided Reading will continue to be taught every day.
