Autumn 1 - 2012
Our topic is Mechanical Toys and Us!
This term we will be learning about toys and ourselves. We all love to play toys and games so we will explore toys from different places and how other children from different cultures play different toys too. We will take a trip to the Bethnal Green Toy Museum, learn about toys from the past and then make our very own Julian’s Toy Museum! We will make our own toys after we have learnt some very careful toy making skills. And because we all love toys we will bring in our own toys from home and share them with the class. We will also learn a lot about ourselves and our bodies and then we will draw and paint our own portraits.
Phonics
We follow the Ruth Miskin Phonics Programme. Children participate in daily differentiated phonics lessons.
Literacy
We will use a variety of toy stories to introduce our topic. We will read and write stories in familiar settings and look at books with predictable and patterned language. We will look at how labels and captions are used and write our own for our classroom. We will find out about toys using information books and use what we have learnt when we create our toy museum. Then we will look at poetry, looking at rhyme and pattern.
Numeracy
We will work within the Primary Framework for Mathematics. We are focusing on securing our counting - forwards and backwards - to 20 and beyond; our number recognition and writing skills; number bonds to 10; adding and subtracting single-digit numbers, and estimating, measuring and comparing objects. We will link our toy museum to a shop where we can solve problems involving money, and use graphs or pictograms to show our favourite toys.
Science
Ourselves
Pushes and Pulls
We will learn about our senses and how we can use them to explore the world around us. By observing and describing living things, we will learn that humans and animals move and grow.
We will use our toys to learn about different types of movement and how to describe these. We will relate these movements to pushes and pulls. We will learn how to make careful observations and how to communicate these.
Geography
In geography we will be exploring games and toys from different cultures. We will find out where they came from in the world and use maps and atlases to research these places.
History
In keeping with our theme, we will learn about toys from the past. We will bring in our own toys to compare with those from the past and make careful observations about their similarities and differences. We will create timelines and order the toys from past to present.
Design and technology
After studying all these toys we will then design and make our very own toy! We will carefully choose appropriate materials and join them so that they are strong and secure.
Art and design
In art and design we will look at a range of portraits and then create our own to communicate ideas about ourselves. We will learn a range of drawing and sketching skills and finally paint a portrait of ourselves.
Music
Music is taught weekly by Adrianna who is a Kodály teacher. The children will build on their knowledge of pitch, rhythm, pulse and duration, exploring and using instruments.
P.E
This term we will have PE on Monday morning and Dance on Wednesday morning.
Please ensure that your child brings in their PE kit consisting of shorts, t-shirt and plimsolls to school both on Monday and Tuesday every week. Children must wear school uniform on these days.
